The D.A.R.E. program offers preventive strategies to enhance those protective factors, especially bonding to the family, school and community, which appear to foster the development of resiliency in young people who may be at risk for substance abuse or other problem behaviors. Researchers have identifited certain protective and social bonding factores in the family, school and community which may foster resiliency in young people, in other works, the capacity of young people for healthy, independent growth in spite of adverse conditions. These strategies focus on the development of social competence, communication skills, self-esteem, empathy, decision-making, and conflict resolution, sense of purpose and independence, and positive alternative activities to drug abuse and other destructive behaviors.
Officer Bob Long and the Wind Gap Middle School Administration implemented D.A.R.E. this year (2004). Officer Long teaches at the Wind Gap Middle School and is the School Resource Officer. In addition to D.A.R.E. he also offers presentations on anything that would be law related.
The School Resource Officer Program is a collaborative effort by certified law enforcement officers, school administrators, educators, students, parents, and the community to offer law related educational programs in the school in an effort to reduce crime, drug abuse, and violence. The program focuses on preventing juvenile delinquency, maintaining a safe school environment, and providing a positive law enforcement presence in the school community.
The Plainfield Township Police Department in partnership with the Pen Argyl School District has an officer based at the Wind Gap Middle School to maintain a safe and secure environment on the school campus, bridge the gap between law enforcement officers and students in order to increase positive attitudes toward law enforcement and reduce juvenile crime.
The exclusive focus on the physical and social territory of the school is an important aspect of the SRO concept, unlike law enforcement officers who respond to school problems as a result of calls for service or 911 calls by school personal, the SRO knows the schools physical layout and is aware of who belongs on school property and who does not.
